Essential Oil Safety for Maternity, Babies under 30 months, Children under age 5,8,12 years



Phototoxicity: Bergamot, Lemon, Orange, Tangerine, Lime, Grapefruit, Ginger, ALL Citrus oils can cause sunburns, avoid exposed skin to sunlight for 12 hours if you’ve applied citrus oils. Covered skin is ok.




Birch: Avoid during Pregnancy, if you have Epilepsy, do not ingest. Do not use on children under age 2. Do not apply to neck or chest of children under age 12.

Cajeput: Do not use if Pregnant

Camphor: Do not use if Pregnant or on young children

Spearmint: Do not use on necks & throats of babies & children under age 12

Cinnamon: Do not apply to skin of children under age 5. Do not use as a single during Pregnancy.

Clary Sage: Avoid during Pregnancy, Do not use while drinking alcohol can amplify drunkenness.

Clove: Avoid during Pregnancy,

Copaiba: Excessive doses may cause vomiting or diarrhea. If Pregnant consult physician before use.

Eucalyptus Globulus: Do not diffuse, Do not use if Epileptic condition.

Eucalyptus Radiata: Do not use if you have Epilepsy.

Lemongrass: Do not take large doses if Pregnant, Dilute.

Mugwort: Do not use during Pregnancy, Do not use as single, tiny amount in blends is ok.

Oregano: Do not diffuse except in Blend, Do not use on children under age 12, Do not use when Pregnant or Lactating,

Peppermint: Do not give to babies under 30 months by ingestion/ orally. Do not apply to neck & throat of children under age 3. Avoid diffusing for children under age 8. May increase jaundice in children. Do not apply over a large area of the body to reduce fever or lower body temperature, can create chills that can be dangerous and cannot be reversed.

Ravintsara: Do not use during Pregnancy or on young children.

Rosemary: Avoid during Pregnancy, Do not use on children under age 4. May increase jaundice in children. Not to be used by Epileptics. People with high blood pressure should avoid using Rosemary long-term.

Sage: Do not take topically or ingest in high doses. Do not use during Pregnancy. If Epileptic do not use. Double dilution instructions when using on children.

Spruce: Do not use on children under 6 yrs old. Dilute more when children under 12 yrs.

Tea Tree: Ingesting excessive amounts of 10ml or more have shown toxic effects. Keep out of reach of children.

Thyme: Do not apply undiluted,

Vetiver: Do not use when Pregnant, Do not give to children under age 12 yrs for Ingestion/Orally.

Cedarwood: Avoid during Pregnancy. Use only in dilution.

Wintergreen: Do not Ingest. Do not use on children under age 2, Do not use on neck or chest of children under age 12. Do not use if Epileptic. Do not use if Pregnant.

Frankincense: When taking both topically and orally, it may interfere with enzyme action in metabolizing medications.











German Chamomile: When taking both topically and orally, it may interfere with enzyme action in metabolizing medications.  When taking diabetic medications, it may cause slight hypoglycemic effects when taken orally.  


Grapefruit: When taken orally, it may interfere slightly with enzyme action in metabolizing
medications. 












Juniper: If taking diuretics juniper may increase the activity. 


Lemongrass: When taking both topically and orally, it may interfere with enzyme action in
metabolizing medications.  When taking diabetic medications, it may cause slight hypoglycemic effects when taken orally.  May enhance the effects of antibiotics. 


Myrtle: When taking diabetic medications, it may cause slight hypoglycemic effects when taken
orally. 












Neroli: is mainly used for its psychological effect. 


Oregano: When taking diabetic medications, it may cause slight hypoglycemic effects when taken orally.  May enhance the action of antibiotics. 










Peppermint: May enhance absorption of fluorouracil.  May enhance bio-availability of
cyclosporine.  May reduce the effectiveness of codeine.  












Rosemary: May enhance the effects of antibiotics.  People with high blood pressure should avoid using rosemary long-term.

Sweet Basil: When ingested in high quantities it may have some blood thinning properties, promote slow hypoglycemic effects, and may inhibit MAO enzymes with some minor effects on raising blood pressure, causing minor confusion, and diarrhea.









Tea tree: (Melaleuca Alternifolia) Ingesting excessive amounts of 10ml or more have shown
some toxic effects.
